Dream Categories

Most of us know that we either have good dreams, bad dreams, or seemingly no dreams (this is highly questionable because every one dreams. My husband falls in this category, but I can state on good authority that even though he doesn’t remember dreaming, he talks in his sleep 🙂 ). I was discussing these categories the other day with someone and, they asked the typical question, “Are these the only kind of dreams that exist?” Well, the answer is no. There are various categories of dreams, which can be experienced, and not all of them are spiritual. As I have stated in earlier blogs, it is essential to know that not all dreams come from the LORD. To understand, discern, and seek revelation is so important in order to get to the true source of your dream. As Christians we seek the LORD to hear His voice, and if HE chooses to speak in dreams then I don’t know about you, but I want to be alert and listening. Remember, Numbers 12 tells us the five ways that God speaks to man, and dreams and visions are only two of the least important but stil highly significant forms of communication between God and man. If God is the same yesterday, today, and forever (note the word, forever, eternal, never ending) then He still speaks the same way he did in Biblical times. In this post I’m going to list a few categories to help decipher and break down the different areas where dreams can fall into just to give a little insight into the various  kinds of dreams we actually can have.

1.Body Dreams: These are the kind of dreams that are often attached to the changing chemicals in our body due to illnesses, medicines, pregnancy, etc.
2.Chemical dreams: (Soulish realm) Dreams that are associated with prescription drugs, illegal drugs, alcohol, etc.
3.Self-Conditioned dreams: (Spiritual) These dreams tell you where you’re at with God. Most of the time in these dreams you will say something like, “I’m not like that!” However, this is God’s way of shaking you up and dealing with you internally. This is for the intent and purpose to bring to light the areas that need change in your life in order to help you reach the place where He wants to lead you.
4.Direction dreams: (Spiritual) These type of dreams tell you what God is wanting you to do
5.Warning dreams: (Spiritual) These often tell you not to do whatever it is you are doing or about to do. Pay attention to what you are praying about, considering, or open doors that have come your way recently. Think about the three wise men. They were warned in a dream not to return the same way.
6.False dreams: (Can arise from the demonic or own soulish realm) Often these dreams are to remind us that we can, in fact, cause dreams to be dreamed. Jeremiah 23 warns us that dreams can come from our own soul and fleshly desires: “For thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Let not your prophets and your diviners, that be in the midst of you, deceive you, neither hearken to your dreams which ye cause to be dreamed.” Lets say, for example, that you are so in love with a red mustang. You want this car, and it’s all you can think about. Chances are that you will dream that you have this very same car. That doesn’t mean that it is meant for you to have it. Instead, it is our own desire that has produced the dream. This is where intercession and prayer comes in because we must learn to discern the true from the false in order that we may know what the LORD is speaking in due season.
7.Prophetic dream: (Spiritual) This is the type of dream that will predict what is about to happen. Think about Joseph, the husband of Mary. He was told in a dream to not put Mary away, but to marry her because the child she carried was of the Holy Spirit. He was given direction about what to name the baby, etc.
8.Fear Dreams: (Soulish/Demonic) Because of fear in your life you will often dream of what you fear. If you are afraid of spiders then you may often dream of spiders. My husband hates snakes, and for many years he would continuously dream about them (even though he couldn’t remember the dreams, he talked about them a LOT during the night).
9.Spiritual Warfare dreams: These deal with what the enemy is trying to do to stop you. They are closely connected with Dark dreams that reveal the plans of the enemy and show how you are combatting these issues, and what the enemy is doing to keep you away from your calling. Dark dreams are usually set in somber mood and colors where everything feels off-kilter.
10.Invention dreams: Did you know that the needle placement for a sewing machine was invented by Elias Howe through a dream? It is said that Elias, while contemplating the needle dreamed he was being chased by cannibals with spears that holes in their tips, and it was because of this dream that he got the great idea of putting a hole in the needle in order to be able to run thread through it. Wow! Invention dreams are amazing!
11.Holy Spirit: (Spiritual) These dreams are most always in color. God has used colors, numbers, and symbols since the beginning of time to speak to His people. Some might ask, “Why does God communicate in dark sayings or speech when He can clearly speak plainly?” Well, think about when Jesus walked the earth. He constantly spoke in parables in order to cause those around Him to search, discern, and pray. What about Cleopas and the other disciple on the road to Emmaus (Biblical). Jesus opened to them what was hidden in scripture from the beginning is what the Word tells us. It says, “what was hidden…” So there are times that we are going to hear it plainly and just know, and then there will be other times that we may not understand or have revelation. There are some areas of our lives and our dreams that HE wants us to search out and discover for ourselves. Other times, he wants to keep part of the message hidden for a time and a season in order to plant the seed in the heart of man when man’s mind is not yet ready for that complete understanding. This is why we get dreams where we don’t fully understand the revelation. There is probably a good reason for that. He wants us to spend some time praying and pondering. Ecclesiastes 3 says there is a time and a season for everything. Job 33:14-16 says, “For God may speak in one way, or in another, yet man does not perceive it. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls upon men, while slumbering on their beds, then He opens the ears of men, and seals their instruction.” Holy Spirit, Godly dreams, usually click something inside of you where you awake feeling like something has just happened. Maybe the dream stays with you all day. Maybe you feel impacted by what you saw in the night. Whatever it is, these dreams are meant to bring a powerful message to the dreamer.

No matter what kind of dream you experience, just remember that we are never to be led completely by our dreams. Everything should first go through the LORD, and allow HIM to penetrate your heart, mind, body, and soul. He will let you know if it is something from HIM, and if you ask He will reveal His plans for you. Be blessed!

    1. I agree! I try to write my dreams down as soon as I get up, but even then, I still have a hard time recalling all the details, or sometimes, even my dream at all. I pray the Jewish prayer (from workshop #1) a lot to help retain any and all spiritual dreams. I’m like you, I want to know what the Holy Spirit is saying through these prophetic night time enigma, and I pray for the Lord to continue to speak and give me wisdom and revelation on all dreams from Him. Blessings!!

  1. You are blessed. I dream a lot and I try to write them down too. I’m grateful to God for the ability to see things before they happen and often through my dreams. With this article of yours, I know better and I’m thankful to you for sharing.
    More grace❤
