Are You a Voyeur?? Nah, It’s Just An Observation Dream

I remember the dream vividly. I watched as an older couple (family members) slowly moved into an elevator. The woman was pushing the man in a wheel chair, and I could tell that they were in a large hospital. I knew instantly that something was wrong. In the dream I saw that the man was very injured. Both of his legs were wrapped in casts, and his arms were bandaged along with his head. I rode the elevator up to a high wing in the hospital where the sign said ER. They never noticed or acknowledged me. It was as if I was merely observing them from a distance.

When I woke up, I was shocked by the direct message of the dream. I went to my pastor and explained the dream, and what I felt that it could possibly mean. At this time the man was fine. I said, “What do I do? Should I call them up and tell them to be careful?” Her answer was simple: “I would simply pray and intercede for them.” So together we just began to pray for the couple. A few weeks later, I heard that the man was working with other members of his church on an upper floor, and he fell through a hole about (I can’t remember exactly) 7 or 8 feet high onto a concrete floor. Now, this man was in his seventies at the time. The thought of falling that far and hitting concrete is devastating; however, there is a God in heaven who knows the plans and ways of man. For all of those weeks I had continued to just pray for this man. The dream never left me so I knew that it was important to just keep him in my prayers. I’m not saying that this was what kept him from being only slightly injured, but I am saying that prayer is powerful! At the time, my sister-in-law and I was doing a small, local television program called “The Gathering Place,” and we interviewed the man about the incident. He said that the moment he fell he knew it was going to be bad; however, it felt as though, when he hit the floor, he was falling into a bed of angel feathers. Wow! His injuries were minimal (I think a broken ankle was the worst). The Lord knew when He showed me the dream that I would take it seriously. He knew that I would seek council and pray diligently whether I understood the dream or not. You see, it wasn’t about me. It was about being faithful and listening when the Father speaks.

What is an Observation Dream?

Observation dreams are important to the body of Christ, but they are also dangerous. Learning to understand observation dreams, to pray, to intercede, is essential, but above all the dreamer truly needs council and revelation from the Lord, a pastor and/or mentor before progressing with the dream, or in some cases addressing the person(s) within the dream.

So how do I know if it’s an observation dream? If you are watching the scenes before you unfolding much like you would a movie then you are having an observation dream. That means that God is showing you something, but it is not about you. Most of the time these type of dreams are not for you personally but for someone else. It is important to add here that these type of extrinsic dreams are not the most common. It is more common to dream intrinsically (internal, personal). One of my favorite dream teachers was John Paul Jackson, and he used to say (I’m going to paraphrase) that when we dream we must remember that most messages are to the dreamer, for the dreamer, and about the dreamer. This is an important rule to abide by because it will help in interpreting not to assume or presume things about other people in your dreams. However, for this blog I’m mainly referring to those observation dreams that really do fall in the extrinsic category (for others). In my lifetime of dreaming I can say that I have only had a handful of these types of Observation dreams. Sometimes the end results were good and other times they were not so good.

Handling observation dreams with wisdom

This is the key! Applying wisdom and keeping dreams covered in prayer is an essential tool. It is important not to “assume” that you know exactly what the dream means. For example, if you see Sister Suzie from your church in a dream, and she is acting all ki ds of crazy, don’t just assume or accuse before understanding what it the Lord is trying to show you. Be faithful to pray and seek council. Be open to understand what it is the Lord is speaking about. Perhaps He is showing you her because she needs deep prayer, or maybe there are certain characteristics she holds that reflect in your own life and attitude. He is trusting you, after all, with an important intercessory assignment. It is not meant for gossip or slander or accusations, but these dreams come to pray and intercede on behalf of another brother, sister, nation, region, city, or even our own lives, etc.  Who knows how much your prayers will affect the outcome of what they might be facing. No matter what be diligent to seek the Lord, and if He doesnt reveal it to you then just cover it in prayer until you feel a release in your spirit. Be blessed and keep dreaming!
